| Enjoy a brief panoramic tour through northern
Rome. Drive through the regions of Lazio and Umbria to
Florence. This city of Etruscan-Roman origin flourished
as a free city in the medieval period and is the birthplace
of the Italian language. Enriched by the Medici family,
Florence reached its peak in the Renaissance period and
is famous for its art. Tour the city center visiting the
Accademia Gallery to see the original David, the Third
Pieta’ and the Prisoner, all by Michelangelo. Continue
to the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower, with its
grandiose dome by Brunelleschi, the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s
bronze doors and the Bell tower by Giotto. Proceed to
the Piazza della Signoria with the Palazzo Vecchio. See
the City Hall, Loggia dei Lanzi with Cellini’s statue
of Perseus and the Fountain of Neptune. After lunch (optional),
proceed to Piazza Santa Croce to visit the church of Santa
Croce where Michelangelo, Galileo, Rossini and Machiavelli
are buried, or spend some time shopping in local stores
like the old “School of Leather.” Continue
along the Viale dei Colli, to the Piazzale Michelangelo,
to view a copy of Michelangelo’s David and to enjoy
a panorama of the city with its famous Ponte Vecchio.
Note: You can spend a night in Florence, enjoy a day of
leisure and leave for Rome at about 4pm. |
