| Tour the tomb of the Apostle to the Gentiles.
The venerable “Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the
Walls” was constructed on the site where the Roman
necropolis in which Saint Paul was buried after his martyrdom
at the Three Fountains. At the location of the tomb there
first arose a marker, a “trophy” that was
already the destination of pilgrimages from the 2nd century
A.D. Here, Emperor Constantine constructed a first church,
which was first consecrated in 324A.D. by Pope Silvester.
In 386A.D. the three emperors Valentine II, Theodosius
and Arcadius commissioned the reconstruction of the church.
Saint Paul’s is one of the greatest jubilee basilicas
since the first Jubilee was declared in 1300 by Pope Boniface
VIII. In 1823, the Basilica of Saint Paul was almost completely
destroyed by a devastating fire but was reconstructed,
as we see it today, with the contributions of all of Christianity
and re-consecrated completely by Pius IX in December 1854.
Admire the quadruple portico, the majesty of the naves,
the stunning wall mosaics, the chapels and the cloister.
But above all, stop in front of the precious ciborium
that covers the main altar: two meters beneath lies the
body of St. Paul, the man who brought the Gospel of Christ
to the entire know world of his time. |
